The area that I chose to consider in between both schools is Water Street of the downtown area. As you probably all know the make up of this specific area is basically of bars. This is not why I have chosen this location. I’ve chosen this area because I enjoy the life of the downtown area. I’m not used to crowded night life due to the fact that my hometown doesn’t really possess this. I find it an interesting way to get to know people as well as a great way to get to know the city.
Despite the fact that I said I didn’t choose this location because of the bars my object is going to reflect that. The object I choose to stand in as a metaphor of this place is Pabst Blue Ribbon. I didn’t choose this object because it is a form of alcohol, I chose it for its history. When Pabst was first created through Schlitz it had been entered into a tasting contest. Once this contest was finished it had been decided that Pabst be awarded the blue ribbon. This is why Pabst is now called Pabst Blue Ribbon or PBR. I find that it’s an interesting connection through its title as well as the connection it has with Milwaukee.
For the other half of the assignment...
The personal object that I’ve chosen for this assignment is my Grandfather’s old camera that was given to me after he passed away. This object is my most personal possession because of the fact that my Grandfather used to photograph with it. It’s silly but I feel through this camera we are still connected in that he can see what I am photographing.
The geographical equivalent to this object would definitely be Miller Park. I say this because I feel that I have the same connection with that as I do with this camera. My Grandfather was a huge fan of baseball and within the few years I had with him much of our time was spent there.
For the public intervention piece I chose to collaborate with Amber Blanchard and Ally Santiago. We created a public work that is similar to the idea of Andy Goldsworthy's work however we had a different perspective in mind. In creating this divider of the sidewalk we wanted to interpret how people would walk through. In creating this we also wanted to interrupt someone's every day path with something interesting. As we watched people pass after we created this we noticed people walking on one side or another. It created a type of traffic path way, according to the direction the person would walk on the appropriate side. Materials we used in creating this were chosen only for the idea that it would not harm the environment we placed it in. The piece is made up nothing more than popcorn seeds and dry beans.
