GPS Drawing

For my GPS drawing, I was in a group of 5 people who split in half. We decided to each take a different way to meet at the same place. The place we chose was an area that had 3 abandoned buildings that were near a train tracks. The place was strangely attractive even though it was covered in garbage and graffiti. We met two homeless men there and had a brief conversation with them. In the case of our GPS drawing, I would have to say that the destination ended up being more interesting to me than the end result of the drawing.

Micro/Macro

The place in Milwaukee that reminds me of an object is Sunrise Foods in Riverwest on the corner of Weil street and Locust street. Sunrise Foods has a soft place in my heart because last year I lived extremely near there and would go quite frequently. So frequently, in fact, that all of the workers there all knew me by my first name and would all greet me by it when I came in(and still do whenever I make it over there). This summer right after I moved away from that immediate area I made it back and purchased a pair of sunglasses for $3 and they became my favorite pair. Now every time I wear them and someone comments on them I always tell them they are from Sunrise Foods and become a sort of advertisement for them.

The object that reminds me of a place in Milwaukee is simply a glass. The place that it reminds me of is Lakefront Brewery, which is technically between MIAD and UWM. Ever since I turned 21 years old, everyone had been telling me I had to go visit cause it was so fun and such a good deal. I never had the opportunity to do so. Almost every single person I knew had the free glass that was given to them at the end of the tour and I was so jealous. Some of my friends had two or three of them! I needed to get one for myself. I almost cared more about possessing one of the glasses then I did about actually getting the tour. Finally, two of my friends decided to plan a day to go on the tour and I was finally able to go. I finally received my glass at the end of the tour and was quite proud.

For my intervention, I teamed up with fellow UWM students Lisa Press and Amber Blanchard. We decided to disrupt people's walking patterns by splitting the sidewalk into two halves with environmentally friendly (and also pretty to look at) seeds and beans. We created at sort of divider of the sidewalk to some, but others may also look at it as a pathway to follow. The point was to make the traveler of the sidewalk to make a decision once approaching our few squares of sidewalk in which we placed our trail of seeds and beans. I am anxious to see if people leave it be and chose sides to walk on, or completely disrupt it and interact with it.

The personal place that I have chosen to write about is actually a very public place that I’m sure a majority of our class has been to, Alterra on Humboldt. Ever since I was sixteen years old I knew I wanted to live in Milwaukee after graduation. I, in fact, was all accepted into school, signed up for classes, and had even found my future dorm mate on facebook when my parents broke the news to me that they were forcing me to stay at the two year UW system school in my hometown up north to get my general education classes out of the way. I cried almost every day they made me go to that school. After making me stays the full two miserable years, I finally was able to move to Milwaukee. On my first day living in Milwaukee, right after moving into my first apartment, I went to the Alterra on Humboldt with a friend from high school who was able to move to Milwaukee right after graduation. I ordered my coffee and sat down at their outside seating area. I looked around and at last realized I had made it to the place that I had worked so hard to get to for almost four years. Now every time I go there I cannot help but feel both a sense of nostalgia and accomplishment.
